Members of the Lancashire Climbing and Caving Club engage in a comprehensive span of winter mountaineering, ranging from scrambling on the Snowdon Horseshoe, through winter climbing in Scotland and ice climbing in the Alps to mountaineering in the Alps and big mountain ranges of America and the Himalayas.
Each year LC&CC members partake in snow and ice climbing either in organised meets or in smaller groups to suit the individuals. Making use of huts in North Wales and Scotland (including the CIC hut on Ben Nevis) the club can take full advantage of the winter conditions in the UK. For more reliable ice climbing conditions members travel to Rjukan in Norway – winter equivalent to Stanage with its roadside ice climbs and massive 10 pitch routes – and also Alpine venues such as La Grave and Chamonix. Alpine climbing in the summer uses the same skills as winter mountaineering and these trips have also extended to South America and unclimbed Himalayan peaks.
